We are the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), an innovative professional medical association located in Darien, IL, a southwest suburb of Chicago. Established in 1975, the AASM is a professional, forward-thinking membership organization dedicated to the advancement of sleep medicine and related research. Our mission is to assure quality care for patients with sleep disorders, promote the advancement of sleep research, and provide public and professional education. We represent a combined membership of 12,000 accredited member sleep centers and individual members, including physicians, scientists, and other healthcare professionals.

The AASM has a perfect opportunity for an experienced sleep clinician or researcher to contribute to the development of systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines for the sleep field. In this independent contractor (1099) role, responsibilities include a combination of research, analysis, and editing tasks to ensure the quality and accuracy of the guideline documents produced. The consultant will work closely with a task force of content experts and AASM staff to streamline the guideline development process. Authorship will be given in the guideline documents, if all ICJME authorship requirements are met.

Total Estimated Hours: 55-120 hours/project, with projects, typically, lasting up to 3 years.
Pay rate: $120 per hour

Responsibilities
The Sleep Clinician Guideline Consultant will collaborate closely with a task force of content experts and AASM staff to complete certain steps of the AASM guideline development process. The consultant will maintain consistent communication, via email and regularly scheduled calls, for the duration of the project, as well as attend up to two in-person meetings, typically in the Darien office. The main responsibilities of this role include:

Literature Review
  • Conduct title/abstract reviews to identify relevant literature.
  • Perform comprehensive publication reviews to assess eligibility for inclusion in systematic reviews.
Data Extraction
  • Extract relevant data from selected studies for outcome measures.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency in data extraction processes.
Meta-analysis Review
  • Review and assess meta-analyses conducted for the project.
  • Provide insights and feedback on the different components of the GRADE methodology and findings of meta-analyses.
Literature Review Updates
  • Conduct periodic literature review updates to incorporate new evidence.
  • Ensure systematic reviews remain current and relevant.
Manuscript Preparation
  • Edit systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines for clarity, coherence, and adherence to established guidelines.
  • Ensure consistency in formatting and referencing.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • Advanced degree (e.g., MD, PhD, or equivalent) with expertise in the field of sleep medicine or research.
  • Experience in conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
  • Understanding of sleep-related research methodologies and evidence synthesis techniques.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to critically appraise scientific literature.
  • Excellent written communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with clinical practice guideline development processes and GRADE methodology is preferred.
